Its antidepressant effects are mediated through the glutamatergic system and subsequent neuroplasticity and can be amplified when combined with psychotherapy. The ketamine-induced dissociative state should not be seen as an unwanted side-effect, but as a unique opportunity for psychotherapeutic intervention.
