Simple Bone Cyst: Individualizing to Simplify Treatment
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Simple Bone Cyst, also known as unicameral or essential, is a benign lesion made up of a solitary cavity filled with clear or slightly bloody fluid and lined by a membrane of variable thickness and uncertain nature.
Objective: To describe the management of Simple Bone Cyst in patients treated at the Orthopedic Oncology Clinic of Centro Clínico Fénix Salud.
Methods: A review of clinical records and consultation protocols from the Orthopedic Oncology Service between January 2019 and December 2024 was conducted. This was framed as a prospective cohort study analyzing different invasive and non-invasive treatment options.
Results: 21 patients were diagnosed with SBC: 2 were treated conservatively, 5 received drainage using the Scaglietti method, and 14 were treated surgically with intralesional resection, high-speed burring, and cryoablation. Incisional biopsy was performed in only 3 cases. Of those treated with Scaglietti, 3 experienced local recurrence.
Conclusion: Individualized treatment based on patient age and lesion location yields excellent outcomes in managing this condition. The best bone substitute is autologous bone.
