Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review the medical complications associated with calorie restriction in individuals with anorexia nervosa. Methods: A thorough review of the literature through January 2026 was completed. Results: The medical complications associated with restricting behaviors affect every body system, and the primary treatment for these complications is nutritional rehabilitation. Conclusion: Anorexia nervosa is a highly lethal mental health illness that results in myriad medical complications affecting every organ system, especially at increasingly low body weights. These medical complications are best treated utilizing a multidisciplinary team consisting of medical providers, dieticians, and behavioral health providers.
