Abstract

People turn to AI for many reasons, one of which is emotion regulation. This paper reviews the research on that use, both among the general population and among people engaged in psychotherapy. We highlight three domains: consumer use, use by psychotherapists, and use in research on psychotherapy and assessment. Within each, we examine current trends and identify gaps in what is currently known. Ethical and legal considerations are also addressed. This overview may be particularly useful to individuals in mental health fields, especially when concerned with emotion regulation.
