Donald M. Hilty, MD

Donald M. Hilty, M.D. is Vice-Chair of Education and Director of Telepsychiatry and Distance Education at Keck School of Medicine at USC. His research involves health services, telepsychiatry, models of care, mood disorders, and underserved populations. His studies have compared telepsychiatric care to in-person care, and optimizing mental health care by primary care physicians (diagnosis, triage and prescribing per national guidelines). His randomized trial provided disease management for depression via telemedicine based on collaborative care, and he is a Co-Investigator of an AHQR RCT comparing synchronous and asynchronous telepsychiatry. Dr. Hilty’s specific educational interests include pedagogy, evaluation and distance education. He was the Director and Developer of the 5-year MD/MPH UC Davis Rural Program in Medical Education. Dr. Hilty has authored over 180 articles, chapters, book reviews, and/or books and done over 200 peer-reviewed presentations as a member of the Association for Academic Psychiatry, the Academy for Psychosomatic Medicine, the American Telemedicine Association, the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and the American College of Psychiatry. He is writing Treatment Guidelines in a collaborative APA project with the Institute of Medicine.
