Medical research applications for satellite observed nighttime lights

The presentation will outline the satellite observation of nighttime lights from the NASA/NOAA Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Examples will be shown of the dimming of lights during COVID-19 lockdowns, extended power outages in Sana’a, Yeman, and erratic power supplies in Afghanistan. In addition, we will review recent results on the flickering of lights powered by alternating current.
