Edith Burns, MD, was assistant professor and associate professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health for ten years before joining the faculty in the Division of Geriatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where she attained the level of professor of medicine and professor of population health-epidemiology. Dr. Burns was previously a Pfizer/AGS scholar and an American Federation for Aging Research grantee. She is currently a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Society of Behavioral Medicine. She has been the primary investigator and co-investigator on numerous NIH, AHRQ and foundation grants.

Though an active clinical researcher for more than 35 years, Dr. Burns has spent a significant portion of her academic career mentoring students, residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty in the fields of geriatrics, internal medicine, epidemiology, and clinical and translational science. As a key team member of the MCW Reynolds Foundation Award for developing innovative approaches to geriatrics education and training (2000-2005), she designed, attained approval for, and implemented one of the first combined medicine-geriatrics residency programs in the U.S., serving as the program director for seven years. She spent four years as a standing member of AHRQ’s Health Services Career Research Training study section and was co-director on an NIA-funded Medical Student Training in Aging & Injury Research grant.

Dr. Burns joined the faculty at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell as professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, and the Institute of Health System Science at the Feinstein Institutes, in February 2019. Her major roles involve developing collaborative relationships and pursuing clinical research, mentoring faculty in research, evaluation of clinical transformation and quality improvement initiatives, and educational innovations, and acting as preceptor to geriatrics and palliative medicine fellows and residents.
