Abstract

This study aimed to analyze how humanized care is provided to blind patients in the hospital environment, considering the practices, perceptions, and challenges involved in this process. This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study conducted with 10 blind individuals served by the Association of the Blind of Piaui, in Teresina, Piaui, Brazil. Data were collected through structured and semi-structured questionnaires, administered orally, and analyzed. The results highlight significant weaknesses in hospital care, especially regarding communication, reception, structural accessibility, and professional preparedness. Most participants reported feeling insecure and uncomfortable upon entering the hospital environment, as well as difficulties moving around and a lack of accessible resources. It was found that 90% had experienced situations of embarrassment or professional unpreparedness, and 100% stated that professionals are not fully trained to care for people with visual impairments. The lack of verbal identification, treatment directed at the caregiver, and the absence of adapted communication were identified as the main barriers. Conversely, 70% of participants highlighted professional training as the main measure to improve care, followed by structural adaptations and the inclusion of accessible resources. It is concluded that hospital care for blind people still presents significant deficiencies, stemming from institutional ableism, lack of specific professional training, and the absence of an inclusive structure. The study reinforces the need for ongoing education in inclusive communication and accessibility, implementation of adapted protocols, and investment in practices that value the autonomy, dignity, and rights of people with visual impairments.
