Head-Hands-Heart: Speech-language pathologists' implementation of an innovative program to improve the quality of life of persons with dementia
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Head-Hands-Heart dementia program is an innovative program that aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with dementia residing in long-term care facilities. Speech-language pathologists are uniquely qualified to lead implementation of this program due to specialized training in cognitive-communication abilities and disorders. The Head-Hands-Heart program provides flexible, individualized, person-centered programming that promotes engagement, reduces distress, and enhances the overall care environment. This article describes what the Head-Hands-Heart program is and how speech-language pathologists can carry out the program at long-term care facilities. Sample goals speech-language pathologists can use when submitting documentation for reimbursement are also included. As healthcare systems change, programs such as this highlight the crucial role speech-language pathologists have in providing meaningful care beyond traditional therapy models.
