Howard W. Mielke

Howard W. Mielke is an adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Tulane University School of Medicine, where his research examines the relationship between urban environments and human health. His work focuses on environmental exposures, particularly lead contamination, and the effects of metals in urban soils on human health and disease. Through studies of soil contamination, household paint, and childhood blood lead levels, he has investigated environmental factors associated with lead exposure in communities, including New Orleans. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College, he completed both a master’s degree and a PhD at the University of Michigan, and has held academic appointments in geography, pharmacy, chemistry, and environmental research.
