Abstract

Returning to work (RTW) after a cardiovascular event, such as acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is a critical aspect of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Effective CR not only enhances a patient's quality of life but also ensures financial stability by reducing occupational disability-related costs. Multiple factors involved to return to work process, including physical health, psychological well-being, work-related factors, and the severity of the cardiac event. This review explores the role of CR in facilitating RTW for post-ACS and post-CABG patients, highlighting key considerations for a safe and successful transition to work and daily activities. Interdisciplinary approaches are crucial, as different medical and rehabilitation professionals contribute to optimizing patient outcomes. Furthermore, the type of work and associated physical demands must be carefully evaluated for each patient. Special attention is needed for developing countries, where cardiac rehabilitation programs are less established, to ensure these patients receive adequate support. The article concludes by discussing future strategies to improve return to work rates, improving quality of life, and minimize the economic burden of cardiovascular diseases.
