David Hawkes, PhD, is a molecular virologist and director of the Australian HPV Reference Laboratory and Molecular Microbiology laboratory at the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer. He is an internationally recognized specialist in human papillomavirus testing and HPV-based cervical screening. His work supports laboratory quality, assay evaluation, surveillance, and implementation of screening technologies in Australia and internationally. He has contributed to research on self-collected samples and point-of-care approaches intended to expand access to cervical cancer prevention. His career connects molecular diagnostics with population health and practical screening programs.
