About Peter

Peter Sykes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Otago, Christchurch, and a practising gynaecological oncologist. After completing his medical training in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, he undertook subspecialty training in gynaecological oncology in Melbourne before returning to Christchurch in 1997. His clinical and academic work focuses on improving gynaecological cancer services, advancing cervical cancer prevention, and promoting equitable access to screening. His research has included human papillomavirus testing, cervical screening methods, HPV vaccination, and conservative management of cervical precancerous conditions, alongside teaching and postgraduate supervision.
